BISHOP RICHARD ALLEN

The African Methodist Episcopal Church traces its roots to the remarkable life and ministry of Bishop Richard Allen, a man whose faith, perseverance, and commitment to justice helped shape a movement that continues to impact lives around the world.

Born into slavery in 1760, Richard Allen experienced firsthand the hardships and injustices of bondage. Yet through a powerful encounter with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, he discovered a faith that would not only transform his own life but also inspire countless others. Through diligent labor and determination, Allen purchased his freedom, becoming a living testament to the power of hope, resilience, and God's sustaining grace.

As racial discrimination persisted within the church despite the message of Christian equality, Allen recognized the need for a place where people of African descent could worship freely, lead faithfully, and serve God without restriction. His vision led to the founding of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the first independent Black denomination in the United States.

In 1816, Richard Allen and several African American ministers were ordained as elders by Bishop Francis Asbury, and Allen was subsequently elected and consecrated as the first Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Under his leadership, the denomination became a beacon of spiritual growth, education, social justice, and community empowerment.

The legacy of Bishop Allen extends far beyond the founding of a denomination. His commitment to freedom, human dignity, Christian education, and social progress continues to guide the mission of the AME Church today.
